Por Larrañaga Montecarlos


The Por Larrañaga Montecarlos Cigar is a great addition to Por Larrañaga Cigars. Founded in 1834, the brand has built a well-established reputation in the Cuban cigar market. Featuring a Deliciousos vitola – it measures 159mm by a slender 33 ring gauge. It’s full of only the finest leaves from the famous Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba.


Por Larrañaga Montecarlos Appearance


The wrapper of the Por Larrañaga Montecarlos has a strong colorado tint to its color scheme. Upon closer examination, there is some darker marbling in the color scheme.


There isn’t much in the way of oils on the wrapper. The wrapper also has a rougher complexion to it. There are some thin visible veins as well as some visible wrapper seams.


The Por Larrañaga Montecarlos features a gold band. The band features the text “POR LARRAÑAGA” in black font with the later word slightly curved.


Below that text is the text “1834” (also in black font) surrounded by a small gold etched rectangular frame. 1834 represents the year the original Cuban brand is founded by Ignacio Larranaga. The remainder of the band has gold etching on it.


The cigar features a cedar sheath covering most of the cigar from the footer to the band. On the sheath is the text “Montecarlos” in a modern style black font. The upper and lower part of the sheath has a gold ribbon surrounding them.


Preparation for the Cigar Experience


From that point, a straight cut to remove the cap. Once the cap was removed, the pre-light is drawn. To no surprise, the dry draw produces plenty of cedar notes. There is a slightly bittersweet note.


While you will get a lot of “wow” factor flavor-wise with this pre-light draw, it is still a satisfactory one. At this point, ready to light up the Por Larrañaga Montecarlos and see what the smoking phase would have in store


Por Larrañaga Montecarlos Flavor Profile


The Por Larrañaga Montecarlos start out with a continuation of the cedar notes There is also a note that seems to be a fusion between earth and natural tobacco. There is also a slight cream note in the background. On the retro-hale, a combination of cedar and black pepper.


During the first third, the cedar and earthy natural tobacco flavors are the primary notes. Meanwhile, in the background, the subtle cream note remains in the background.


As the Por Larrañaga Montecarlos Moves into the second third, the cedar notes take the edge. The cedar provides a mix of both sweetness and spice.


Meanwhile, the earthy tobacco notes are a close secondary note. There still is a creamy component in the background, but it is more distant.


The last third of the Por Larrañaga Montecarlos see the cedar note become more spicy than sweet. The earthy tobacco notes diminish somewhat but are still present in the background. This is the way the cigar experience comes to a close. The resulting nub is slightly soft to the touch and cool in temperature.


Por Larrañaga Montecarlos Burn


When it comes to the burn of the Por Larrañaga Montecarlos, it performs quite well. The burn path remains straight from start to finish. The burn line itself has some jaggedness from time to time.


There are some touch-ups required along the way, but the number of touch-ups is not out of the ordinary. The resulting ash is a charcoal gray color. It isn’t overly firm ash, nor is it lose ash either. The burn rate and burn temperature are ideal

The draw to the Por Larrañaga Montecarlos has a little resistance to it – something on a parejo cigar. This makes the Por Larrañaga Montecarlos a low-maintenance cigar to derive flavors.
